May 2014

Just over fifty years ago, Eunice Kennedy Shriver hosted a day camp for children and adults living with intellectual disabilities.  She wanted to encourage these individuals to explore their capabilities in a variety of physical activities.  Her idea was embraced and flowered in to the event we now know as The Special Olympics.

In partnership with APS, club sponsor Rachel Woolfenden and twelve of our students volunteered at this year’s Arizona Special Olympics.  The event was held on the grounds of Grand Canyon University where athletes from all over the state competed in an array of sports events.  Specifically, our Key Club members escorted athletes to their events, timed some of the races, and helped hand out awards.  It was a fun filled day loaded with enthusiasm, sportsmanship and a great sense of victory.  The Rockets are so proud that our Key Club members were part of such an inspiring event.
