Every year students from all over the country get the opportunity to travel to Washington DC through a program called Close Up.  This is a non-profit, non-partisan foundation whose mission is to educate and empower young people to participate in our political system of democracy.

This March, Social Studies teacher Ms. Zamar, led our students on this adventure.  While there, participants translated classroom learning into real life interaction.  These trips are not your typical lectures and seminars.  Students visited memorials and monuments, and with the aid of program assistants, attendees engaged in discussions about the significance these landmarks still hold today.  Students even visited the halls of Congress and personally met Senator Jeff Flake and Congressman Trent Franks giving our students the opportunity to voice their concerns about Arizona issues.

When the work days were over, students enjoyed socials and evenings filled with debates and discussions about their experiences.  What a wonderful way to enrich our students’ classroom learning and to broaden their view of our country and the world.
