Moon Valley's Golf team once again participated in volunteering for the Phoenix Open.  For over 20 years Moon Valley golfers have braved cold, frosty mornings at the TPC Scottsdale to help spectators enjoy the tournament.  This year Diego Mussi and Colby Thordsen represented MV.  These golfers have the responsibility of walking with players and carrying a scoreboard that shows the score of the group they are with.  Their official title is Standard Bearer.  Our volunteers keep track of player’s shots and make changes to the scoreboard at the end of each hole.

It's a great opportunity for them to be "inside the ropes" and feel what it would be like to play in a large PGA event.  Recently, with the growth of the 16th hole, "The loudest hole in golf", our "sign boys" have received a little extra attention.  As the group enters the tee-box through a tunnel, they were greeted by 20,000 cheering spectators.  After shots are hit the crowd screamed as though they were at the Super Bowl, and booed if the shot misses the green.  As the group leaves the tee box the crowd will often chant "Sign Boy", indicating to the standard bearers to spin the sign.  At the end of the tournament they are given a signed ball, a hand shake and a Thank you from some of the greatest golfers around.
