November 2014

The Moon Valley Athletics program is on a streak.  We are closing out the fall sports season by proudly sending some of our athletes to state competitions.

Our Swim and Dive team had a great showing at the state qualifying meet.  Matt Wood took 3rd place in both the 50 and 200 yard freestyle races.  Sergei Lavrikov delivered by taking 3rd place in the 500 yard freestyle.  Diver Kevin Curran stepped up to the board and locked in a spot at the state meet.  Our boys relay team won 3rd place in the 200 yard freestyle relay and then took 2nd place in the 400 yard relay.  Not to be overlooked, our ladies had some appearances in the top sixteen and our ladies’ freestyle relay team brought home 4th place medals. Congratulations to Matt Wood, Sergei Lavrikov, Stefan Popvic, Brad Biehl and Kevin Curran who will be competing in state.  Spectators are welcome to attend on November 7th and 8th at Skyline Aquatics in Mesa, Arizona.

Boys Cross Country felt the burn at their state qualifying run.   Sophomore, Mario Hanna, surged ahead of the pack at mile 2 maintaining a 10 second lead over his closest competitor and was crowned with the honor of individual sectional champion.  The team rallied and for the third year in a row they will compete in state.  Good luck to Senior Captain Christian Anderson, Junior Captain Eddy Yvanez, Juniors Angel Reyes and Eric Sanchez, Sophomores Mario Hanna, Israel Dorantes, Brian Vilchis, Edwin Morales, and Paul Estrada who are going to state.  Get some fresh air and enjoy nature this Saturday, November 8 while cheering our runners at the Cave Creek Golf Course.  Race time begins at 12:30 PM.

Our Chess Team have been flexing their brain muscles all this season and will also compete in state.  The effort and dedication have paid off as this is the first time in more than ten years that the Rockets will be competing in the state competition.  Way to go to our eleven member team:  Jacob Robishaw, Kevin Curran, Tristian Roberts , Anthony Encinas , Andy Tran, Fernanda Beteta, Michael Long, Shemar Tomlinson, Austin Schmitz, Drake Cruz, and Joshua Parpart.  We wish them many check mates as they compete in state the afternoon of November 7th at McClintock High School in Tempe Arizona.

And then there are our boys of fall.  Moon Valley’s Varsity Football Team had a 9-1 winning record.  The program’s amazing turn-around is so exciting that they were featured more than once by Channel 12 and on 3TV’s Friday Night Games.  Give the Rockets your support and cheer them to victory as they take on the Peoria Panthers on Friday, November 7th.  The game will be played at Peoria High School, located at 83rd Avenue and Peoria Road.  Kick-off is at 7 PM.  Adult ticket prices are $8.00 each, and elementary age children or high school students with an ID are $6.00 each.  Children 5 and under are admitted for free.  Make sure you wear red and let’s fill up our side of the bleachers and fuel the game with Rocket Power.
