Chief Barnett was born May 7, 1962, in Littlerock, Arkansas. He graduated from Gulfport High School, Gulfport, MS., in May 1980. After working for two years as a Welder/Ship Fitter at the Pascagula Naval Shipyard he joined the Navy in November 1982 in the delayed entry program. In March 1983 he reported to Recruit Training Center (RTC), Great Lakes, IL. Following bootcamp he reported to his first sea duty station aboard the Aircraft Carrier, USS Ranger (CV-61) homeported at Naval Air Station, North Island, CA. After working on the flight deck he soon realized that this aspect of the Navy was not his calling. Chief Barnett knowing he wanted to stay in the aviation field, he focused on becoming an Aviation Administrationman (AZ) where he would maintain the Logbooks and Associated Records of Naval Aircraft along with their maintenance records, perform data analysis and report critical data up-line. Subsequent duty assignments included: Shore duty stationed at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, WA. Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD); Sea duty stationed at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, WA. Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron One Four Two (VAQ-142), EA-6B Prowler; Sea duty stationed at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, WA. Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron One Three Seven (VAQ-137), EA-6B Prowler; Shore duty stationed at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, WA. Fleet Aviation Training Support Operational Group Detachment, Pacific Fleet (FASOTRAGRUPAC); Sea duty stationed at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, WA. Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron One Four Two (VAQ-142), EA-6B Prowler; Shore duty stationed at Chief of Naval Education and Training (CNET), Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC), Meridian, MS.
 
Chief Barnett retired from the United States Navy on April 1, 2003, having completed 20 years of devoted duty to the Naval Service and his country.
 
Decorations and awards include: Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medal x7; Navy Unit Commendation Medal; Battle “E” x2; Good Conduct Medal x5; National Defense Service Medal x2; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal x3; Sea Service Deployment x4; Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia); Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait); Pistol Marksmanship (Sharpshooter); Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS); Master Training Specialist (MTS).
 
Chief Barnett has been the Naval Science Instructor of the NJROTC Unit, Moon Valley High School since February 18, 2003.
 
Chief Barnett is married to the former Maurica Y. Travelant of Iowa. They have two sons, Benjamin Kristopher Franklin (Kris) and Alex Salvado.
