Lieutenant Commander MacLean grew up in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles.  He was active in the Boy Scouting program earning the rank of Eagle Scout and a scholar athlete in track as a sprinter. 

Enlisting in the United States Navy in 1978 he entered the nuclear power program as a Machinist Mate (Nuclear).  He served as a crew member on three submarines, USS Patrick Henry (SSBN 599) where he earned his submarine designation, USS Aspro (SSN 648), and the USS Hawkbill (SSN 666).  In 1986, while on shore duty, he was promoted to Machinist Mate Chief and in 1990 he was selected for a commission as an Ensign. 

His first officer tour of duty was aboard the Destroyer Tender USS Samuel Gompers (AD37) as the Assistant Radiological Controls Officer and is where he earned his designation as a Surface Warfare Officer.  Transferring ashore in 1994, he served as a Nuclear Project Manager for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where he managed repairs and modernization projects on Trident Submarine reactor plants.  Returning to sea duty in 1996 on the aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) he served as the Reactor Controls Technical Assistant.  He managed the operation, maintenance and repairs to the electrical and electronic systems on the ship’s two reactor plants.  In 1998 he transferred ashore and was assigned to the Naval Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bangor, Washington where he was once again a Nuclear Project Manager and the Surface Production Management Assistant.  He directed repair efforts on the surface ships home ported in the Puget Sound region and the propulsion plant overhaul of the Trident submarine USS Alaska (SSBN 732).  His final assignment was as the Reactor Mechanical Assistant on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) directing the operation, maintenance, and repairs to the mechanical systems on the ship’s two reactor plants. 

Over the course of his twenty-five year career Lieutenant Commander MacLean completed two Strategic Deterrent Patrols, seven Western Pacific deployments, an extended operation at the North Pole, and numerous other operations.  His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, several Navy Commendation, Achievement, and Good Conduct Medals as well as other campaign and unit awards. 

Lieutenant Commander married his high school sweetheart, Karen, in 1979.  Karen is the Assistant Finance Administrator for the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.  Their daughter, Danielle, attended Gonzaga University and settled in the Seattle area where she is a Human Resources professional.  Their son, Steve, is an emergency room physician in Los Angeles, California.
