Three outstanding students from Moon Valley High School in Phoenix have been honored by a national organization for exemplary volunteer service.

Seniors Lisa Lucero and Colby Thordsen received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. It was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Ms. Lucero has volunteered weekends and summers for Camp Civitan, a summer camp for special-needs children and adults, since she was in junior high school. Mr. Thordsen has spent over 300 hours in various community-service projects through Moon Valley’s nationally known Naval Junior ROTC program.

Junior Madison O’Neal founded Bringing Athletes Sports Equipment, or B.A.S.E., to help underserved athletes find the equipment they need to participate in sports. She has been honored with a Certificate of Excellence, which is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and granted to the top 10 percent of all applicants in each state and the District of Columbia.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Stringfield, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”

Craig Mussi, Moon Valley principal, is very proud of these three outstanding young volunteers. Congratulations to Lisa Lucero, Colby Thordsen, and Madison O’Neal!
