January 2015
At the beginning of each
new year, the Student Council classes from the nine schools in our district
participate in a spirit and leadership conference. The theme was “Dance to the Rhythm of Leadership." The day began with all of the students breaking off into several small
groups and visiting either an elementary school or rehabilitation center. Student Council Teacher, Jenna Serafini, supervised a group that visited Sunset Elementary where they read to the
younger children, they helped grade papers and were in charge of running games at
recess.
Afterwards, all of the
groups gathered together for the afternoon session. It began with a motivational speaker named
Troy Davis who was born with a muscle disorder which left him wheelchair
bound. He sparked in ambition in his
audience while speaking about pursuing his dreams despite the challenges he
faced. He never gave in and was rewarded
with the experience of attending the Olympics not just once but twice. Then it was time to share ideas. Students from all of the school mingled to
brainstorm about community service projects, fundraising ideas, and how to
cultivate school spirit. Finally, there
was competition in the form of a talent show.
The Rockets took home second prize for their western style dance and
were crowned the most spirited student council.
