September 2014

In the field of education, the month of September is highlighted by "International Literacy Day" which was on September 8th.  This year the International Reading Association partnered with NASA to kick off a campaign, "Lift Off to Literacy," designed to engage students from ages five to eighteen.  Teachers around the world were challenged to introduce 60 seconds of cross-curricular literacy activities into their classrooms on this day.

Although International Literacy Day was one day, many of Moon Valley's teachers pledged to “Lift off to Literacy” for 60 days. Every two weeks these teachers are receiving a literacy kit filled with literacy strategies, student incentives and a teacher gift.  Instructors have been provide with the following strategies: 60 day story, 3-2-1, Short and Tweet and Stellar Matches.

Anne Kauffman, French teacher, has been doing the 60-day story in her Honors/AP class.  “We have settled into a routine where we do it the minute right after the announcements and before they start their bell work.  They really seem to enjoy it thus far,” Mrs. Kauffman expressed.

Kudos to our teachers who aspire to, not only strive to infuse literacy into the school day, but who also make it fun and invigorating.
